Why Are Mattresses So Much Cheaper at Mattress Outlet? What's the Catch?
Let's be honest.
When you walk into Mattress Outlet and see a mattress priced at $899 that originally retailed for $3,000, $4,000 or even $5,000, you probably have a question.
What's wrong with it?
Fair question.
Because we know what you're thinking.
There has to be a catch, right?
Well, sometimes there is a small cosmetic flaw. Sometimes it's a discontinued model. Sometimes it's a mattress that spent time on a showroom floor.
And sometimes?
There's absolutely nothing wrong with the mattress at all.
So let's talk about why mattresses at Mattress Outlet in Billings, Montana can be so much less expensive than their original retail prices.
Because once you understand how our Outlet works, those price tags start making a whole lot more sense.
1. Overstock Mattresses: Sometimes There Are Just Too Many
Overstock is one of the biggest categories of mattresses that comes through our doors.
Sometimes a manufacturer has more inventory than it needs.
Maybe production exceeded demand.
Maybe a collection is changing.
Maybe a retailer or distributor needs to move inventory.
And sometimes the mattress has a minor cosmetic imperfection or packaging issue that prevents it from being sold through certain traditional retail channels.
That could mean a scuff, a small mark, or even an issue with the protective packaging.
Here's something people don't always realize.
A mattress can become available through an outlet without ever having been slept on in someone's home.
That doesn't mean every overstock mattress is flawless. It means the reason it's available at a discount can vary.
We see opportunities from manufacturers and suppliers that allow us to bring recognizable mattress brands into our showroom at prices you might not expect.
And those savings can be pretty substantial.
2. Closeout Mattresses: Out With the Old Collection, In With the New
Mattress manufacturers change their collections all the time.
New covers.
New names.
Updated materials.
Different comfort options.
Sometimes entirely new mattress lines.
And when those new collections come out, the previous models need to go somewhere.
Hello, Mattress Outlet!
A closeout mattress isn't automatically defective, worn out or lower quality.
Sometimes it's simply a perfectly good mattress that is no longer part of the manufacturer's current collection.
Think about buying last year's vehicle model when the new model year arrives.
It's still a great vehicle.
It just isn't the newest one sitting on the showroom floor.
That's one of the ways you can end up getting a really nice mattress at a significantly discounted price.
And honestly, if you're comfortable and sleeping well, does it really matter that the manufacturer changed the cover pattern?
We didn't think so.
3. Floor Models: This Is Where Some Incredible Deals Happen
Now let's talk about one of our favorite categories.
Floor models.
Mattress Outlet is affiliated with Mattress King, which means we occasionally receive floor models from our other stores when collections change or showroom displays are updated.
And sometimes these can be some seriously beautiful mattresses.
We're talking about premium brands and models that may have originally retailed for several thousand dollars.
Here's an example.
Imagine a luxury Aireloom mattress that originally retailed for around $4,000.
Maybe it spent time on a showroom floor.
Maybe there's a small mark or cosmetic tear.
And now it's being offered at the Outlet for $999.
That's roughly $3,000 less than the original retail price.
Yes, really.
Of course, that's just an example. Our prices and inventory vary, and not every floor model comes with that kind of discount.
But it shows why people get so excited about shopping the Outlet.
For someone who wants a premium mattress but doesn't want to spend premium retail money, these opportunities can be pretty incredible.
4. So, Are Mattress Outlet Mattresses Used?
This is one of the biggest questions we get.
And we're happy to answer it.
Our inventory isn't made up of customer-returned, previously slept-in household mattresses.
Most of what comes through our doors consists of new closeouts, overstocks, discontinued mattresses and other special purchases.
Some mattresses have minor cosmetic or packaging imperfections.
And some are floor models that have been displayed and tried in one of our showrooms.
That's different from purchasing a mattress that someone has been sleeping on in their bedroom for years.
But we also want to be clear: a showroom floor model is not the same thing as a factory-new mattress.
That's why we're upfront about what you're buying.
If it's a floor model, we'll tell you.
If there's a visible cosmetic imperfection, we'll show you.
If it's a new closeout, we'll explain that, too.
We want you to understand exactly what you're getting and why it's priced the way it is.
5. The Savings Can Be Thousands of Dollars
Now for the really fun part.
The prices.
Depending on what comes through our doors, some mattresses may have originally retailed for $3,000, $5,000 or even $7,000.
That doesn't mean every mattress at the Outlet is a luxury mattress.
We have mattresses at many different price points.
But sometimes a high-end model comes through our doors at a fraction of its original retail price.
For example, you might see a queen mattress priced at $899 that originally retailed for several thousand dollars.
When original retail pricing is available and verifiable, we often display it alongside the Outlet price so you can see the difference.
But remember, a mattress's original retail price and its current market value aren't necessarily the same thing.
The most important thing is whether the mattress is comfortable, meets your needs and is worth the price you're paying today.
A great discount is exciting. A great mattress at a great price is even better.
6. What Mattress Brands Can You Find?
This is another reason people are often surprised when they visit.
We're not filling our showroom with brands you've never heard of.
Depending on current inventory, you might find:
Sealy
Stearns & Foster
Serta
Beautyrest and Beautyrest Black
Saatva
Aireloom
And other recognized mattress brands
Sometimes we receive a discontinued manufacturer collection.
Sometimes we purchase a group of closeout mattresses.
Sometimes one of our other stores sends over a premium floor model.
And sometimes a sample mattress comes through that we decided not to carry as part of our regular showroom collection.
Every shipment can be different.
We trust the brands we bring into the Outlet. What changes is which mattresses from those brands happen to be available.
That's why you might come in looking for a Sealy and discover a Stearns & Foster you weren't expecting.
The treasure hunt is real.
7. The Big Difference: Outlet Mattresses Do Not Come With Warranties
Okay, let's talk about something important.
Mattresses sold at Mattress Outlet do not come with a mattress warranty.
These mattresses are offered through our Outlet without manufacturer warranty coverage.
That may be because of how the item was classified, discontinued, purchased or transferred into Outlet inventory.
And that's part of the trade-off customers need to understand when considering the discounted price.
You're potentially getting a mattress that originally retailed for thousands of dollars at a significantly lower price.
But you're not getting the same warranty coverage you might receive when purchasing a current model through a traditional retail store.
We believe you deserve to know that upfront.
Because a deal is only a good deal when you understand what you're purchasing.
8. But We Do Offer a 30-Night Return or Exchange Option
Here's something else people should know.
Just because our mattresses don't have warranties doesn't mean we don't want you to feel comfortable making a purchase.
Mattress Outlet offers a 30-night return or exchange option, subject to our store's policy.
The fee is $99 for a qualifying return or exchange.
The mattress must meet the required condition standards, including being free of stains, odors, tears, scuffs and other damage beyond any condition documented at purchase.
Make sure you review the terms of your purchase with our team so you know exactly what is covered and what is required.
A warranty and a return or exchange policy are two different things, and we want you to understand both.
9. Please, Please Buy a Good Mattress Protector
Okay.
We're getting on our soapbox for a minute.
Buy. A. Mattress. Protector.
Seriously.
If you just scored a premium mattress at an incredible price, why wouldn't you protect it?
Maybe you found a mattress that originally retailed for $4,000 and paid $999.
You just saved roughly $3,000 compared with that original price.
And then you're going to put sheets directly on it and hope nothing ever spills?
Come on, people!
Life happens.
Coffee spills.
Kids get sick.
Pets have accidents.
People sweat.
And once a mattress is stained or damaged, that can affect your ability to qualify for a return or exchange.
A quality mattress protector is one of the simplest things you can buy to help protect that investment.
You don't need to spend a fortune on accessories.
But please, if you're going to invest in a great mattress, even at an Outlet price, protect the thing!
We'll happily show you some options.
10. Need It Delivered? We Can Do That, Too.
We know not everyone has a pickup truck sitting in the driveway.
And even if you do, moving a king-size mattress isn't exactly everybody's idea of a good Saturday afternoon.
Mattress Outlet offers delivery options in Billings.
Our current delivery-with-setup option is $69 within Billings city limits.
That means you can shop the Outlet, find a mattress you love and have help getting it set up at home.
Because getting a screaming deal is great.
Not having to wrestle a king-size mattress through your front door?
Also pretty great.
One Last Thing: When It's Gone, It's Gone
This is one of the biggest differences between Mattress Outlet and a traditional mattress store.
We don't reorder mattresses just because one sells.
When a shipment arrives, we generally have an idea of the brands and models coming our way.
But that selection is always changing.
The next truckload might contain Sealy mattresses.
Or Serta.
Or Beautyrest.
Or something completely different.
And even when we receive the same brand again, it doesn't mean we're getting the same mattress.
So if you find a mattress that fits your body, your budget and your bedroom, keep in mind that we can't guarantee another identical one will come through our doors.
We're not saying that to pressure you.
That's simply how the Outlet works.
So, What's the Catch?
Here's the answer.
You're shopping a constantly changing selection of closeouts, overstocks, discontinued models, floor models and other special opportunities.
Some may have cosmetic imperfections.
Mattresses are sold without warranties.
And we can't guarantee we'll get another one when the one you love sells.
In exchange, you may find a beautiful mattress from a major brand at a price significantly below its original retail price.
That's the trade-off. And for a lot of shoppers, it's a pretty fantastic one.
We're not trying to convince everyone that the Outlet is the right choice for them.
We're here for the people who love a good deal, appreciate quality and understand that sometimes last year's collection or a minor cosmetic flaw really isn't a big deal.
